Rune-Flow Website - Magic and Aphantasia

This is one of my ‘more a plug than a review’ pieces. Jakub is a friend, and he has created a ground-breaking website for magic, aimed at people with aphantasia

If you pick up a book on magic that’s got self-training exercises or almost any magic spell in it, you’ll almost certainly be invited to visualise. I never thought twice about this bias in the literature until I met people who can’t. This is a spectrum thing - some people can visualise if they try hard, some just cannot. And there are those who are hyperphantasic, who get rich imagery when others get little or none, like continuously when listening to music.

So someone who is aphantasic and yet passionately wants to study and practise magic has to make their own path forward, which is what Jakub has done. His work also covers dynamic meditation, for those who find static postures difficult for health reasons.

The Rune-Flow website consists of 3 sections. In Jakub’s own words:

In the Daily Life section, you will find techniques that turn traditional visualization into practical, everyday rune awareness exercises. By observing the energies and attributes of runes in daily activities, these methods help deepen understanding and connection with runic meanings.

The Daily Life Enactment section provides practical suggestions on how to bring the essence of each rune into your daily routine.

Runic meditations have been reimagined by incorporating sound accompaniments to evoke rune energies without relying on inner vision. In the Soundscapes section, you’ll find suggestions and a working soundscape for each rune.

Each rune has its own page in this section, where you will find suggestions for creating or utilizing sounds that align with the rune’s symbolism. These soundscapes are crafted to resonate with the rune’s essence, enhancing your meditation and allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the rune’s power.

Additionally, each page provides a link to one finished soundscape specifically designed to embody the rune’s energy

Here is a sample, SOWILO:

Inspired by martial arts, yoga, tai chi, and qigong, dynamic runic positions blend movement, breath, and intention to effectively embody and project the power of runes. Visit the Dynamic Stances section to learn more.

The Dynamic Stances section … is designed to guide you through dynamic movements and postures that embody the energy of each rune. The exercises suggested here help you physically connect with the runes’ symbolic meanings by using movement, breath, and visualization. While some of the postures may resemble exercises from disciplines like qigong, they are not intended to be qigong or taiji. These movements were developed after years of practicing martial arts, yoga, taiji, and qigong, blending principles from those practices with runic symbolism.

Rune-Flow is a unique, outstanding work. I don’t think anyone has done anything like this before, a thorough exploration of ways of doing magic that don’t involve sitting still and visualizing. It’s something the magical world has needed forever!
